SL East Girls Varsity Soccer vs. South Lyon HS School

SL East girls’ varsity soccer team took to the pitch on Tues to compete against South Lyon.  This was their second meeting this season with East beating them 6-1 in their first match.  Both teams came out strong and were playing hard.  Senior defender Marissa Hamilton, in defending the Cougars net, caused a foul in the box giving the Lions a PK and their first real opportunity to score in the 11th minute of the game.  SL stepped up to the spot on the field and their player took the kick.  Sophomore keeper Elle Penndorf guessed correctly which direction the ball was going to go but the ball still found the back of the net.  East wasn’t going to give up anytime soon.  Four minutes later, junior Emma Pompo crossed the ball to sophomore Alyssa Melquist who took a shot and scored, tying up the game 1-1.  The Cougars were playing hard and determined to get another goal.  Pompo, who was on the Cougars 35-yard line, took a big kick up to sophomore Kate Mazur, who was on the Lions 40-yard line.  Mazur ran up the ball, with some serious speed, dribbled the ball down the field, took a left footed shot and scored giving East a 2-1 lead.  This goal revved up the Cougars. South Lyon had another opportunity to score but Penndorf denied them that coming up with a huge diving save.  The game was getting physical and the SL coach didn’t like how the referee was doing his job and let it be known. The ref not liking the coach’s comments, gave the SL coach a yellow card.  The half isn’t quite over.  With less than 5 minutes left in the half, Pompo dribbled down to what seems to be her favorite spot on the field (the corner) and crossed the ball in front of the Lions net. It was deflected off on of their defenders but junior Ashley Sleeva found the ball, took the shot and scored the 3rd goal for the Cougars.  What an exciting half with East wining 3-1.  The Lions started the second half strong, scoring in the opening minutes.  Now the score was 3-2.  East was ready to attack.  Pompo crossed the ball and deflected from a Lions' defender to sophomore Kaylie Samluk who just inside the Lions box.  Samluk booted that ball like a rocket passed the SL keeper increasing East’s lead 4-2.  The game was getting physical again and this time the SLE coach got a yellow card.  The game wasn’t over for the Cougars.  Sophomore defender Alex Armstrong passed the ball up to Melquist who took a shot and scored her second goal of the game.  SLE beats SL once again this season 5-2. Keep it up ladies!

Quote from Coach Pete:  "I thought we had a nice start to the game and missed some opportunities early on but South Lyon came out ready to play as well and got up on us 1-0 on a PK. The girl’s really kept their composure at this point being behind for only the first time all year to bounce back with 3 goals in a span of 20 minutes in the first half to lead at the half 3-1. It’s a real testament to the girls the way they played in the 2nd half and finish the way they did and adding 2 more goals to stay undefeated against a well coached and hungry South Lyon team . "
