South Lyon and South Lyon East Soccer Play for a Cure

Monday night, the South Lyon East Cougars soccer team traveled across town to take on the South Lyon Lions. But, the night was more than just about a game between two rivals, it was a night where a community came together in support of a great cause. The Lions soccer team hosted their annual Pink Out for Breast Cancer Awareness. The two teams were United in Pink to make a great event and to raise money for The PINK FUND. Through a 50/50 raffle, memorial luminary sales and collecting donations the teams raised $775. In addition, the fans were entertained throughout the evening with performances by the South Lyon Stars pom team, the SLHS Choir, and a combined routine by the SLHS Varsity Pom team and the SL East Varsity Cougarettes. At half time a special balloon release took place at centerfield. Captains from each team (Lions Captains: Connor Harris, Thomas Chavez and Trenton Lach, Cougars: Tristan Nagel, Zach Hemker and David Crapps) came together and released balloons in memory of those who we have lost and those who are battling breast cancer. And while there was winner of the game, it was the PINK FUND and the South Lyon community who were victorious last night.

The matchup between the Cougars and Lions is always competitive and filled with a lot of energy. Last night’s matchup was just that. The first half led to a 2-0 lead for the Lions with goals from Senior Nick Koenig and Sophomore Jack Voight. The Cougars continue to struggle with finishing on their scoring opportunities but in the second half they were able to land a goal cutting the Lions lead in half. Junior Isaac Shiner scored for the Cougars with an assist from Sophomore Leo Ifuku. The Cougars defense (Seniors Nagel, Hemker, Nolan Croy and Junior Noah Deskovitz), along with their goalie, Sophomore Nathan Samluk, kept the Lions scoreless in the second half. Final Score: East 1, South Lyon 2

In JV action, the Cougars struggled to get started in the match up. The Lions took a commanding 3-0 lead in the first half. When the Cougars took the field in the second, they found their game again, scored 3 goals. Unfortunately, the Lions landed another goal in the second half. Final Score: East 3, South Lyon 4

The Lakes Valley Conference Tournament kicks off Wednesday night for the Cougars. They will take on Walled Lake Western at Cougar Stadium. Varsity is set to kick off at 5:00pm, with JV starting at 6:30pm.
