Game Summaries & Headlines.
Tuesday night the South Lyon East Cougar Soccer team hosted the Dexter Dreadnaughts in the round 1 MHSAA District 28 playoffs. Dexter came into the match as the heavy favorite, being rank #2 in division 2 soccer in the state of Michigan and predicted to be the district winner. The Cougars did not let that status intimidate them, rather, they came on to the field looking for the upset. Knowing they had to win to advance, both teams were fired up with the opening whistle. The Cougars and “Dreads” battled back and forth, both having plenty of scoring opportunities but between brilliant defensive plays and outstanding performances by both goalies, neither team was able to land a goal in regulation play. As the temperature continued to drop, the teams headed into overtime (two 10-minute halves). Thirty seconds into the overtime, Dexter capitalized on a lucky bounce deep in the penalty box giving them a 1 goal lead. The Cougars continued to battle the remainder of the overtime but were not able find the back of the net. As the final seconds dwindled, the idea of their season coming to an end became a reality, something they were hoping wouldn’t come for at least a few more games. And while the outcome wasn’t what the Cougars were hoping for, their performance on the night was one to be proud of. Hold your heads up high, Cougars! Final Score: East 0, Dexter 1
On a personal note, for the past two years, I have had the privilege to write these game recaps for Cougars soccer. And it is with a heavy heart and tears in my eyes to say that this will be my last as my son, a senior, wrapped up his high school soccer career with last night’s game. I have thoroughly enjoyed writing these, celebrating and highlighting players and the team no matter the outcome of the games. I will truly miss writing these little articles but most of all I will miss watching these amazing young men playing the sport they love so much. And to all of them, especially the seniors, thank you for letting me be a part of it.
And for one last time….
Go Cougars! Be East!
